Among other house chores like troubleshooting the lawn mower and actually cutting the grass, I had a goal of building two roll-outs over the weekend so that we can have some more functional storage in the kitchen.
Having a cabinet with fixed shelves that are nearly 2 feet deep and close to the floor makes for a frustrating storage space that is nearly impossible to use. It’s amazing how much more enjoyable it is to work in the kitchen with the addition of these two simple roll-outs.
What’s the most annoying thing(s) to store in a kitchen? You guessed it, food storage containers. Even the fancy stacking/locking type are a pain. The upper roll-out with 6″ tall sides will be dedicated to these awkward items. While far from being ideal I think this set up will at least contain the containers so that we aren’t playing Jenga each time we need to put some food away.
The lower roll-out is for some of the heavier and/or bulky items that we still use on a regular basis such as the Dutch oven, food processor, and blender. Again, it’s not that pretty but a huge improvement in terms of functionality.
Most of my design/build experience is with more materials like carbon fiber, machined aluminum and sheet metal. When it comes to wood and “simple” practical things like cabinets, I am admittedly a total noob. At first glance it seems like working with wood should be dead simple but the more I dig in the more I discover what I don’t know. There is much learning to be done.
