Weekend Project #2 – Retrofitting a Dishwasher

For 4th of July weekend my parents came up to visit with their little trailer and conveniently camped out in the driveway. My sister and here boyfriend even visited from Texas! In addition to enjoying some quality family time my dad helped me break ground with this dishwasher project that I wanted to get done ASAP.

This was my first hands-on experience with any sort of home demo/renovation type project. Installing a dishwasher where there were previously built-in cabinets isn’t terribly difficult but it’s definitely a step up from the usual appliance install.  If it were a simple dishwasher swap then it would have been too easy right?

On the surface it seemed pretty straight forward:
(1) Cut an opening into the existing cabinets
(2) Shove the machine into the opening
(3) Hook up power, water supply and a drain hose

However, when the time finally came to make the first cuts, unexpected road blocks started to appear. Nothing major, just a little problem solving here and there like needing to build up the floor slightly. Partial demolition and retrofitting always seems to involve a lot of fiddling and awkward work positions. Anyway, it worked and I was relieved to find that there were no leaks! Now we are left with this skinny space next to the dishwasher. But I have plans for that too….
Stay tuned.
