I’ve got some super exciting developments to share with you. Well, its exciting for us because we get to use these things. I will forgive you if your heart doesn’t start to beat faster while reading this post.
We do a lot of cooking and therefore spend a lot of our time in the kitchen it seems. If you walked into our kitchen the word “functional” probably would not cross your mind. Mostly because it is counter/storage space limited with a single bay corner sink, awkward drawers and cabinets, and no dishwasher. Don’t get me wrong, we love this cute little kitchen. But we would love it even more with a few changes to suit our style.
Jessie and I lived just fine without a dishwasher for a couple years. When we finally got one it was just a used apartment-sized portable unit that was too loud to run at night or during a movie. It was awesome! We also lived just fine with an electric stove/oven for a while. but when we moved to the second rental house we fell in love with the gas range despite, again, being a tiny apartment-sized unit.
So, two big things we wanted to add were a gas oven and a quiet, full-size dishwasher.
Although the dishwasher will eliminate a lot of storage space in an already small kitchen, it sort of functions as a quasi-storage space. Besides saving on labor, water, and energy, it also helps free up some precious counter and sink space because dirty dishes have a hidden home and the dish drying rack is no longer dominating the counter all of the time. Also, I have some ideas about how to make the remaining storage spaces more efficient.
There are lots of large-scale and even medium-scale renovation options that would greatly improve on the current kitchen layout. However, we need to draw the line somewhere and balance home projects with our day-to-day and Airstream aspirations. We are going to embrace the smallness for now and the challenges that it brings. Again, it will be good experience for designing the truly tiny kitchen (galley?) in the Airstream.
